Completed - Make Raspberry Peach Jam
52. Make raspberry peach jam (9/16/2017)
My very good friend Amanda and I have known each other for about 10 years. I remember going to her house in middle and high school and they always had the best jam ever. I always wished that I had some of my very own, and I've always wanted to learn how to make jam/can fruit. So this goal accomplished more than one wish of mine! The recipe and process was easier than I thought it would be, and it went faster with two sets of hands.
We got together at about 9:30 on Saturday morning to go hunting for peaches and shopping for raspberries and jars. We were thinking of going to the farmer's market, but then we ended up finding a fruit stand on our way to get canning jars and stopped there to save time. We got a huge box of really good peaches for $22! And we helped the lady figure out the technology she was trying to use to process cards haha :)
When we got back to my house, we went right to work. I was more grateful for my counter space than ever before. We first had to blanch the peaches, but it didn't work right and we ended up having to peel them anyway. Then into the blender, into the pot with everything else (including 5 cups of sugar!), and into the jars!
Putting the jars in boiling water to seal them was the most stressful. We had to use regular tongs, and they would slip sometimes. (You could say we were in a jam...heh heh...I'll leave.) But Amanda was a pro and neither of us got boiling water splash burns. I think my mom has some fancy canning tongs or clampers or something...if I do this again I'm definitely buying some.
I was so nervous that they wouldn't seal and we'd have tons of jam and we'd have to give it away because we couldn't eat it fast enough. Luckily that only happened to one! I was able to hear the reassuring >POP< of jar lids sealing tight all day. It was really satisfying. AS IS THE JAM. It's seriously the best stuff ever. Which is good, because we'll be eating it for a while :) And we had some peaches leftover and we made some syrup and peach cobbler!
My takeaways from accomplishing this goal:
1. Jam is beautiful
2. Jam is fun
3. Jam isfull of sugar delicious
