Cards, Signs, and Designs | #97 - Job
97. Get a new job that relates to something I want to do - DONE 8/22/14
I would get emails from UVU about internships in the area, and this one caught my eye -
Graphic Design/Printing Internship at BizCard Xpress
Applicant should have experience with Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator, needs good communication skills and the ability to manage multiple projects.
Um. Me. So I applied!
My current job at the time was stressful and difficult. I learned a lot, but I was ready to be done. However, I was really nervous to apply for this internship. I was scared to be doing something where I would have to be creative and help people advertise their business. I didn't think I was THAT creative and I was afraid to make someone look bad.
I was able to get an interview, I showed them my work, and I felt pretty good about it. I also found out that they were changing the internship to a FULL-TIME JOB!! This was way better for my money situation, but my school schedule would definitely be affected. But I figured that if I got the job, things would work out.
And I got the job! As I said before, super excited, but SUPER NERVOUS. But in the long-run, things really worked out well :)
This print shop did everything - signs, business cards, shirts, promo items. There was a lot to learn and I was expected to learn quickly. Luckily I had a good teacher and a great coworker, Rebecca :) It was so fun to work with her and she made me feel like I could do what was needed of me.
Helping me have confidence was especially important because at the end of January Rebecca left and, being the only employee, I had to do basically everything by myself for the next seven months. It was stressful, but I learned a LOT. I have been able to help startup companies with their advertising, I have redesigned business cards for lawyers and other prominent individuals, and I've installed vinyl lettering on cars, windows, and walls. I've had to manage multiple projects, dealing with the ups and downs of each.
It was really cool to have this job, because it went perfectly with my degree (digital media with an emphasis in project management). I could actually apply what I had learned in school to what I did at work, and vice-versa. I got to manage projects, design things, do a variety of jobs, and talk to a bunch of different people. It was definitely one of my favorite jobs. Unfortunately my schedule for spring semester won't allow me to work enough hours, and at the end of November I was let go. I had always wanted to work at a printing place (love the smell of printers and paper), and I'm grateful for the experience. It's actually hard to think of working somewhere else, but I'm sure there are more good opportunities to come! :)
