Completed - Taking Care of My Stuff
61. Take care of all my stuff at my parents' (12/16/2017)
I had a LOT of stuff at my parents' house. Old school work, craft/scrapbooking supplies, old clothes I never took with me, and other random things of mine, were all just taking up space in my parents' huge house. My mom kept asking me to take care of it, but being 3 hours away, always having some event going on when we visit, and with only so much space in our car when we go back home, I haven't done anything about it.
But! I was determined to be an obedient child and do as my mother asked. So on a last-minute trip (without the husband and baby) to my new sister-in-law's bridal shower in October, I set aside some time to go through my stuff. I started with an old dresser and my closet first, then two big bins (like pictured) with some random knickknacks and things that I have saved over the years. There were lots of things that I was ready to get rid of, but with other things I still wasn't ready yet. I attach and remember memories for lots of things that I have, and even sometimes go as far as thinking of memories that could come from an item. This is something I've come to realize about myself while completing this goal. I think it comes from the desire to connect with others, especially with the people I shared the memory with. I'm not sure if it's the greatest quality of mine, but at least I've realized it now and can work through it!
Anyway! I was able to throw away lots of things and take home other things in the two bins. Then, during a trip down for Katie's wedding, I went through the rest of my stuff. I had saved the last bin full of the most time-consuming stuff for last - my school work. (Also the only part of this that I took pictures of.) I am such a paper hoarder! But I can see where I get it from, because my mom saved so much of my elementary stuff! As for high school stuff, I went through so many pictures and note cards and essays...and math homework. It was honestly kind of hard to throw it all away! I eventually had to go KonMari method on some of it and thank things before they went in the trash haha :) The stuff I decided to keep were things that showed how I was as a child - about me pages, top 10 lists, autobiography papers, stuff like that. I also saved poems, things that made me laugh, and some really great artwork. But I did it! I went through the whole bin and got it down to this!
Throughout the few hours of work it took me, I found lots of gold nuggets. There was definitely evidence that I had brothers - characters I drew sometimes suffered violent injuries, blood included. One story I wrote had a dog exploding...I drew limbs and even an eyeball flying away from the explosion...I don't know what was wrong with me. I don't remember being that disturbed haha :) On a happier side, nearly every story I wrote and book cover I drew had a horse in/on it. Even the exploding dog one! From writing about "how to find a leprechaun" to the front of all of my creative writing collections...horses were involved. To further show my obsession: one of my 2nd parent/teacher conference reports had a "celebrate successes" section and what did I have my teacher write down? "Likes horses" haha :) Basically, in that area of my life I haven't changed. From kindergarten to now, I can honestly proclaim:
Bonus! More proof that kindergarten me is more real now than ever:
Love it haha :)
There are some things that I "took care of" but they're not in their final places yet. The last bin wouldn't fit in our car so my parents will bring it up when they visit next. There were some books that my mom will take to DI for me, and I also gave her all my scrapbooking stuff. While they're not gone from my parents', everything that was mine has a place and so I feel I can say it is all "taken care of."
